OSHA hammers BP again: $3 million proposed penalty for alleged violations at Ohio refinery (3/10)
OSHA has cited BP North American Inc. and BP-Husky Refining LLC’s refinery in Oregon, Ohio, with 42 alleged willful violations, including 39 on a per-instance basis, and 20 alleged serious violations for exposing workers to a variety of hazards including failure to provide adequate pressure relief for process units. Proposed penalties total $3,042,000.

The Department of Labor — along with other agencies across the federal government — is gathering ideas online to help increase transparency, collaboration, and participation within DOL as part of the White House Open Government Initiative.

OSHA notifies 15,000 workplaces nationwide of high injury and illness rates (3/10)
OSHA surveys employers to collect workplace injury and illness data it uses to identify employers whose injury and illness rates are considerably higher than the national average. A letter has been sent to about 15,000 workplaces with the highest numbers of injuries and illnesses resulting in days away from work, restricted work activities or job transfers, known as the DART rate.

Cal-OSHA employees ordered to disclose all outside “presentations”
All professional staff inside the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) are directed, under pain of discipline, to report any outside “teaching, presentations and training” performed while working for DOSH including uncompensated volunteer work, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
