1,000 eye injuries every day...

Simply remembering to wear goggles or safety spectacles at home, in your garage, on your lawn or while at work could spare you from becoming a statistic: more than 1,000 eye injuries occur every day, according to the National Society to Prevent Blindness.

Most workers suffering eye injuries do not wear eye protection, and 40 percent of those wearing protection while getting injured wore the wrong kind of eye protection, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The American Society of Safety Engineers has compiled a list of eye protection resources. Guidelines for picking the right safety eyewear for the job can be found in OSHA's standards for personal protective equipment. Check out www.osha.gov under the technical section. Eye safety info from the National Society to Prevent Blindness can be accessed at www.preventblindness.org. And ASSE is the secretariat for the American National Standard Institute's Eye and Face Protection standard Z87.1-1989 (revised-1998). Copies can be purchased by contacting ASSE's customerservice@asse.org.
