OSHA Friday released new ergonomic guidelines for shipyards.“Ergonomics for the Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders: Guidelines for Shipyards”is an industry-specific guidance document that provides practical recommendations to help employers and employees reduce the number and severity of musculoskeletal disorders in the workplace.

The guidelines emphasize various solutions that, according to OSHA, have been effectively implemented by shipyards across the country to decrease work-related musculoskeletal disorders. An “Implementing Solutions” section offers examples of ergonomic solutions applicable to shipyards.

OSHA said it will work with trade, labor and professional organizations to assure that these guidelines and other effective practices are accessible and implemented where appropriate. The agency’s free consultation service will also be available to assist small businesses.
