A National Transportation Safety Board team is en route to Ellicott City, Md, to investigate a fatal freight train derailment that occurred just after midnight.

The incident happened when 21 of a CSX freight train’s 80 coal-filled cars derailed near the downtown area, flipping over and falling from a bridge. Some landed on cars in a parking lot below, leading to speculation that there may be more victims. Heavy cranes have been brought in to move the train cars and enable the search.

The two people who were killed were not railroad employees.

NTSB Railroad Investigator Jim Southworth is Investigator-in-Charge and is on scene. He will be accompanied by NTSB technical specialists in the areas of human performance, operations, and signals.
