ISHMUp until a decade ago, when human resources professionals were tasked with hiring a safety management professional they often searched for candidates with formal training and a certification such as the Certified Safety Professional (CSP). That all changed in 2003 when the Institute for Safety and Health Management (ISHM) was founded by the National Safety Management Society (NSMS).

The ISHM went to work developing the internationally recognized Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) certification. The CSHM program recognizes the top safety and health professionals who have demonstrated knowledge of health and safety management skills and techniques through examination and experience.

The CSHM program is the only accredited certification that focuses entirely on the safety management process. This unique certification program has made those professionals who have earned the certification highly sought after by both industry and government institutions. Today, more and more HR professionals rely on the ISHM’s CSHM designation to identify qualified candidates to fill critical safety and health management positions.

“Professionals who have earned the prestigious CSHM designation are in high demand because many HR professionals have come to depend upon the certification to ascertain the most competent person for positions dealing with safety and health management issues,” reported Randy Morton, CSHM, Vice Chair, ISHM Board of Directors. “Government agencies such as OSHA, EPA, Homeland Security, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are all very familiar with the CSHM program. Just as these government agencies have discovered the value of professionals with the CSHM certification, private industry has increasingly sought out these highly qualified candidates,” he continued.
