The Associated Press is reporting that officials at the Bangladesh garment factory that collapsed on Tuesday, killing at least 238 people, ignored orders to evacuate the building prior to the disaster.

According to the AP, police ordered the evacuation on Tuesday after seeing deep cracks in the walls of the building. Instead, the factories’ operators kept more than 2,000 people working.

Garment companies operating in the collapsed building sell their wares to western retail giants like Wal-Mart and Dress Barn.
