The American Society of Safety Engineers recently appointed two new trustees to its board of directors; Joel M. Haight, Ph.D., P.E., CSP, CIH of Pittsburgh, PA, and Michael Murray of New York, NY.

Both Haight and Murray joined the board in October, 2011, and will serve through June, 2015.

Haight is the branch chief of the Human Factors Branch at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) – National Institute for
Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at their Pittsburgh Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, where he manages the NIOSH branch that does human factors, ergonomics, behavioral and training research for the mining industry.

In the nearly 30 years prior to joining CDC-NIOSH, Haight was an associate professor of energy and mineral engineering at Pennsylvania
State University, and an engineer and manager for the Chevron Corporation. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters, and is the editor-in-chief and a co-author of the ASSE Safety Professionals Handbook.

Haight has a Ph.D. and master’s degree in Industrial and Systems Engineering from Auburn University. In addition to his membership
with ASSE, he is a professional member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), and the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Murray, a managing director with Aon’s Global Risk Consulting Practice, leads the corporation’s risk control and claims broker
services division. He plays a key leadership role in driving cohesion and partnership between the Aon risk consulting unit and the corporation’s retail
broking division.

Prior to his tenure at Aon, Murray served as a consultant for Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, and was an inspector with the
state of New Hampshire’s Department of Labor.

Murray has a B.S. in Occupational Safety from Keene State College, and a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. He has
served as president of both ASSE’s Metropolitan New York and Greater Boston Chapters. As a student, he was also a recipient of one of the first ASSE Foundation scholarships.

Haight will serve as Chair of the Foundation’s Research Committee and Murray will help to advance the Foundation’s corporate
outreach initiatives.
