Free disaster prep/workplace safety Web expo slated for May 6 (4/27)

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE), the American Red Cross, the Canadian Red Cross, StayWell and the OSHA’s Alliance Program have teamed up to present a free ‘Protecting Workers on the Job’ Web Expo on Occupational Safety and Health Professional (OSHP) Day, Wednesday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT, according to an ASSE press release. The live event offers vital workplace emergency preparedness and workplace safety information and serves as a keynote of the May 3-9 North American Occupational Safety and Health (NAOSH, www.asse.org/naosh09) Week.

During the Web Expo ASSE Senior Vice President-Elect/Region I Vice President Terrie S. Norris, CSP, ARM, CSPI, of Long Beach, CA, will present a program titled “Measuring Your Safety Program Success” from 2:45 to 3:45 p.m ET. It is a presentation aimed at helping companies develop and implement effective safety processes that increase workplace safety and contribute positively to the bottom line. The presentation provides company success stories, comparison studies, return on investment facts, showing measurement information, hazard identification and control, measuring working conditions for safety, employee perception surveys, training and information policies. A presentation that will provide companies and employees with key tools to enhance their safety programs now.

The Web Expo will allow attendees to learn from industry experts without having to leave their desk. It will also provide live question and answer sessions, chats and messaging which make the event truly interactive. Attendees also have an opportunity to visit virtual booths in the Exhibit Hall to find services, information and content while networking with other safety and health professionals.

In addition to Norris’ presentation, other timely and topical workplace emergency preparedness information will be provided by industry experts from OSHA, the American Red Cross and the Canadian Red Cross, during five free Webcasts scheduled throughout the day.

Other topics and speakers include: Christina Jones, CIH Industrial Hygienist, OSHA, on OSHA’s ‘Emergency Response Role’; Rick Caissie, national director, Injury Prevention, Canadian Red Cross on ‘Engaging Employees and Senior Management in Creating an Injury Prevention Culture’; Al Roth of Newport Corporation, Khurshed Kutky of QMI-SAI Global and Dan Straw of Pinkerton Government Services on ‘Maintaining a Safety Culture in a Recession’; Jose Benavides, Office of Small Business Assistance (On-site Consultation), OSHA, and Jim Boom of Office of Partnerships and Recognition (OSHA Challenge), OSHA, on ‘OSHA’s Cooperative Programs: On-site Consultation and OSHA Challenge Pilot Program’.
