ASSE’s November symposium to focus on leadership

September 18, 2012

Florida SignThe American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) upcoming symposium will take a look at how occupational safety, health and environmental (SH&E) professionals can have a greater impact on workplace safety and their organizations through effective leadership.

The aptly-titled  ‘Safety is About Leadership’ symposium will take place in Orlando, Florida, November 1-2. The symposium will feature keynote speakers, sessions and interactive workshops.

According to the ASSE, SH&E professionals must communicate their work results to corporate leaders. They must develop and communicate in business terms their results on protecting people, property and the environment, and how that work contributes positively not only to the bottom line, but to a brand’s positive reputation, sustaining high performance, workers comp cost savings, and more. Many SH&E professionals struggle with how to present the facts to their organization’s decision makers – who need the information when formulating corporate strategies and determining financial support for workplace safety and health programs.

The symposium will offer presentations from top business, academic, international and corporate leaders who will discuss critical leadership skills, how to employ best practices to effectively lead, what the best business schools are teaching about leadership and garnering C-Suite support.

University of Notre Dame Professor at the Mendoza College of Business Dr. J. Michael Crant will provide a keynote presentation on best practices of great leaders on Thursday, November 1. The Center for High Performance President/CEO Susan Annunzio, former adjunct professor of management at the University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business, will discuss leadership strategy for an environment that drives high performance which is based on proactive, fact-based decisions, confronting harsh realities, leveraging individual and team talents, adapting quickly to change and finding opportunities in challenging times.

Other topics to be covered during the two-day symposium include: critical leadership skills; strategic thinking; safety and leadership – oil and water; leadership strategies that work best, generation by generation; building sustainable leadership; transformational safety leadership; meta decisions in corporate safety; negotiation skills for safety leaders; leadership without borders; assessment for proactive leadership; and,  from safety manager to business partner.

The symposium will be held at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista hotel in the Walt Disney World Resort.  Registration includes 1.3 continuing education credits (CEUs).
