Proposals requested for U.S. and Mexico Environmental Border 2012 projects (5/13)

May 13, 2009

The U.S.-Mexico Environmental Program: Border 2012, in coordination with the Border Environment Cooperation Commission, is now accepting proposals for projects in the California/Baja California and Arizona/Sonora border region. Selected awardees may receive up to $100,000 each, according to an EPA press release.

Eligibility is open to U.S. and Mexican non-governmental organizations; local and state governmental agencies; industry associations; universities; Mexican federal agencies; U.S. tribes and Mexican indigenous communities.

“These grants help fund pilot projects that address human health and environmental priorities along the U.S.-Mexico border,” said Laura Yoshii, acting regional administrator of the EPA. “We encourage potential applicants to attend the upcoming grant workshops to obtain more information and submit their proposals.”

The last day to submit grant proposals is June 30, 2009. Successful applicants will be notified on September 4, 2009.

The Request for Proposals can be downloaded from the Border Environment Cooperation Commission’s Web page at www.cocef.org. Proposals should be submitted to Marielena Constandse of the Border Environment Cooperation Commission at mconstandse@cocef.org.

A series of grant proposal workshops are being offered in California and Arizona:
  • May 13 - U.S. EPA’s San Diego Border Office, 610 W. Ash St. Suite 905, San Diego, CA 92101, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
  • May 27 - Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Southern Regional Office, Arizona State Building, 400 W. Congress St., Ste. 444, Tucson, AZ 85701, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
  • June 9 - San Diego State University Imperial Valley Campus Library, 720 Heber Ave., Calexico, CA 92231, 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.
The U.S.-Mexico Border 2012 Environmental Program protects the environment and public health for 10 states on both sides of the 2,000-mile border, including 26 U.S. The Border 2012 seeks to reduce pollution in water, air and on land, reduce exposure to chemicals from accidental releases, and improve environmental stewardship.
