ASSE names its Safety Professional of the Year

Tim Page-Bottorff, a highly respected safety trainer, mentor and motivational speaker who is often called a “public utilities safety guru,” is the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) 2018 Edgar Monsanto Queeny Safety Professional of the Year. He has taken a variety of innovative steps to advance the safety and health profession while being influential with safety training for school-age children, encouraging them to consider safety as a fun and meaningful career.

Publication date set for new global safety standard

A highly anticipated global standard aimed at creating safer workplaces everywhere will be published on March 12, according to the Switzerland-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that spearheaded the five-year development process with support from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Companies can purchase a hard copy of ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems from ASSE beginning the week of the standard’s publication.

Registration is now open for ASSE’s Safety 2018 Professional Development Conference & Exposition in San Antonio. The nation's largest conference for occupational safety and health professionals – expected to draw more than 8,000 people from 40 countries – takes place June 3-6 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on the banks of the San Antonio Riverwalk.

ASSE’s Hudson honored by international OSH organization

American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Executive Director Dennis Hudson has been honored with the President’s Distinguished Service Award by the U.K.-based Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). The presentation occurred in November at the IOSH annual conference in Birmingham, England. The award honors the work and achievements of individuals who have made significant contributions to IOSH or the occupational safety and health profession for several years.

Founded in 1911, ASSE has a global membership of more than 36,000 safety, health and environmental practitioners worldwide. ASSE advocates on behalf of its members while also providing robust professional development, training and networking opportunities. ASSE has an annual budget of approximately $18M, staff of 75, and operates a robust network of 152 chapters in the United States and internationally.

Workplace injuries decline, but ASSE wants further improvements in job safety

The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) says it is “encouraged” after seeing newly released data that shows a continued decrease in occupational injuries and illnesses, but thinks even more can be done to protect workers. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Nov. 9 that workplace injuries and illnesses at private industry employers were down by 48,500 cases in 2016 compared to the previous year.

ASSE members approve new name in landslide vote

The world’s oldest professional safety society, founded more than 100 years ago, will adopt a new name following a historic membership vote that was overwhelmingly in favor of the change. The American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) will become the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) next year when it unveils a redesigned website in conjunction with Safety 2018 in San Antonio. The switch was approved by 74 percent of voting members.
