A food safety advocacy group is blasting the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for approving a genetically engineered apple despite receiving what it says were 73,000 comments against the action.
The ok given to Okanagan Specialty Fruits’ Arctic Apples, which are genetically engineered to resist browning when sliced, marks the first approval of an aesthetically-improved genetically engineered food and will expand the reach of GMO products into the produce aisle, which currently only offers a small number of GMO foods.
