Heading up the Department of Labor will be Elaine Chao, a former Peace
Corps director. Chao was selected two days after Linda Chavez,
President-elect George W. Bush's first choice for the top labor job,
withdrew to quell protests over the disclosure that she had housed and
paid an illegal immigrant who performed household chores for her in the
early 1990s. Chao's appointment requires Senate confirmation, which is
expected to come quickly.
Little is known about Chao's view on labor issues, though political
analysts say she's well-qualified to run a large federal department.
