The rules applying to lockout/tagout (LOTO) can be somewhat confusing. In the U.S., there is a government standard, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147, The Control of Hazardous Energy and an industry consensus standard, ANSI/ASEE Z244.1-2003, Control of Hazardous Energy-Lockout/Tagout and Alternative Methods. The OSHA standard has the force of law, via the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Act. OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.147 applies to the control of energy during servicing and/or maintenance of machines and equipment.
