A confined space is defined as an area large enough for an employee to enter and perform work. But confined spaces have limited or restricted means of entry or exit and are not designed for continuous human occupancy. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), “the deaths of workers in confined spaces constitute a recurring occupational tragedy; approximately 60% of these fatalities have involved would-be rescuers.”
