Here’s what one state is doing to prepare for active shooters

The timing was coincidental. On the same day a shooter opened fire in a Fifth Third Bank in downtown Cincinnati, killing three people and wounding two others, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker convened an active shooter/hostile event response (ASHER) program for first responders and school officials at the headquarters of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

Construction employee killed in Cincinnati shooting rampage

September 7, 2018

A construction supervisor who was overseeing work on the Fifth Third Bank building in downtown Cincinnati was among those killed when a gunman opened there yesterday morning, according to news sources. A spokesman for Gilbane Building Company said the company was “absolutely grief-stricken” over the death of 64-year-old Richard Newcomer, who was working on the third floor of the building at the time of the shooting.

Public health leaders oppose Kavanaugh for Supreme Court

The nation’s leading public health organization has come out in opposition to President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Supreme Court. In a letter to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Judiciary accompanying an assessment of some of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s decisions, the American Public Health Association (APHA) said; “We are deeply concerned by many of Judge Kavanaugh's views and previous decisions related to public health.”

Workplace violence wounds 4 at YouTube HQ

April 4, 2018
Terrified employees trying to avoid being targets during yesterday’s mass shooting at YouTube headquarters in San Bruno relayed their experiences and feelings through Twitter. The shooter was reportedly 39-year-old Nasim Aghdam, a San Diego resident who police say may have been angry at the company for what she perceived as a “suppression” of her online videos.

The two ANSI-accredited Standards Developing Organizations recognize the need to collectively address the intersections of security, safety and fire safety management to maximize protection of human and physical assets during active shooter incidents.

Experts: Gun violence prevention requires public health approach

July 29, 2014

Preventing gun violence will require a scientific public health approach and recognition of the limits of predicting individual cases of violence, according to experts slated to speak at the American Psychological Association’s 122nd Annual Convention. The experts will discuss how gun violence disproportionately affects different populations and results in consequences such as suicide, homicide and unintentional shootings.
