A recently fired trainer at an upscale Coral Gables gym returned to his former workplace a short time later and shot two supervisors to death.

News sources say 33-year-old Abeku Wilson walked into the exclusive Equinox club last month and shot 35-year-old General Manager Janine Ackerman and 42-year-old Fitness Manager Marios Hortis with a handgun before turning the gun on himself. Wilson died instantly while Ackerman and Hortis died after being rushed to the hospital.

Patrons of the gym and people at nearby restaurants and shops fled the scene or sheltered under tables.

A shouting match

Wilson reportedly had been fired for being involved in a shouting match a few days before the shooting.

“There is nothing I can say to lessen the searing pain we all feel at this terrible moment,” managing partner Harve Spevak wrote on the fitness chain’s Facebook page Sunday. “Yesterday’s tragedy at our Coral Gables location has impacted everyone in the Equinox family.”

The company made grief counselors available to both employees and clients. Upwards of 500 people attended a candlelight vigil honoring the victims.

Victims were targeted

Miami-Dade police issued a statement saying the victims were targeted. “This was not an act of random violence.”

Wilson’s former co-workers described him as reserved and professional.
