Safety 2006

April 8, 2006

Seattle • June 11-14

The Safety 2006 program offers in-depth material covering the breadth of the SH&E Profession. General Session speakers Stan Slap and Steve Farber promise to be dynamic and thought-provoking, and Wednesday’s Luncheon Program, “A Fish Story” with John Yokoyama and Fishmongers from the Pike Place Fish Market, will be a lot of fun. Attendees should not miss the night Out at Tillicum Village Monday Night for the sights, sounds and flavor of the Pacific Northwest.

Schedule of key events:

Wednesday, June 14

Lunch Program
John Yokoyama and Jim Berquist
“A Fish Story”
This session will delight and entertain attendees with an authentic and meaningful story of the Pike Place Fish Company in Seattle’s Pike Street Public Market. The company and its famous fish throwers — fishmongers — created a vision of the future that inspired them with the prospect of being “World Famous” — in a way that makes a profound difference for people. They have discovered how to communicate effectively and how to coach in a way that leaves their team members empowered. They’ve discovered what it really means to make a difference to the people they serve.

Key topics & themes

How to better manage safety is an important element of the program with a variety of sessions addressing key management tools and techniques, such as the use of dashboards and control charts, benchmarking and sessions on measurement tools. Sessions addressing safety’s relation and contribution to business and operational processes (e.g., Demonstrating Value, Engaging CEOs, Leadership, Performance, etc.) are also included in the program.

ASSE will hold an Executive Summit again this year, offering attendees the perspective of senior management.

The importance of culture as a key ingredient in successful corporate and organizational safety programs is the subject of a number of sessions. Case studies (e.g., GE Crash Course in Culture Change, Combining Safety and Quality) emphasize this theme. Solid technical/engineering and standards tracks include sessions on a variety of topics, such as Confined Spaces, Scaffolding, Electrical Safety, Boilers, Conveyors, Slips and Trips, Fall Protection, and various ANSI Standards, including ANSI Z10 (OHSMS), A10 (Construction and Demolition), Z359.1 (Fall Protection), NFPA 70E and international standards such as OHSAS 18001.

Strengthening the technical appeal at this year’s ASSE conference will be the International Society for Fall Protection’s Fall Protection Symposium, overlapping with the last day of the ASSE conference and continuing most of the next day. Significantly more time this year is devoted to topics on risk management and risk assessment, demonstrating rising interest within the profession in this area (e.g., Cost of Risk, Enterprise Risk Management, Strategic Risk Management, Leading Risk Indicators, Recreation Risk Management).

The program is very broad-based with substantive offerings in many industry and/or practice-specific areas, reflective of the broad reach of ASSE and the safety profession. Sessions are offered in Construction, Mining, Healthcare, the Environment and Transportation, as well as in practice areas such as Industrial Hygiene, Training, Emergency Response, Security, Fire Protection and Consulting.

Program highlights

Executive Summit — Tuesday, June 13
A key objective of the conference is to bring a wide variety and level of perspectives to attendees. The American Society of Safety Engineers is pleased to present its 2006 Executive Summit. The purpose of the Summit is to provide the perspective of leaders at the highest levels of their organizations. This year’s Executive Summit Panel will discuss their views on the importance of employee safety and health in their organizations and the expectations business and industry leaders have of the safety and health function. The program will include a moderated panel discussion with the opportunity for attendees to submit questions for the panel.

Key Issue Roundtables — It’s your chance to SPEAK UP!

Do you have a lesson learned to share with fellow professionals? Are you looking to meet others with mutual interests? Three roundtables will be conducted during the concurrent session periods, one each day, on topic areas of interest to attendees. Join the discussion and share your ideas, challenges and successes in this moderated session.
IF YOU HAVE A SUGGESTED TOPIC SEND IT TO pdcspeaker@asse.org.

Fundamentals Program

For beginning professionals in the SH&E field or other conference attendees who work in disciplines associated with the safety profession, this program offers an excellent introduction to a broad range of topics and a breadth of insight into the profession:

  • Overview of Regulatory Compliance
  • Hazard Identification and Control • Workplace Health
  • Environment • Basic Safety Management

    Poster Sessions

The poster session program provides a means of stimulating interest in safety, health and environmental research, as well as communicating other useful SH&E information of interest to the profession to include best practices, new program initiatives, etc. They will be on display near session rooms throughout the conference.

    Spanish Sessions

Four sessions to be delivered in Spanish are planned for the program, as well as other sessions addressing the safety and health of Spanish-speaking workers.

    Expo Education

This program offers attendees a dedicated opportunity to learn from exhibitors in an educational venue. Exhibitors will bring their insights and expertise to help provide solutions for problems. Ten sessions are integrated into the regular concurrent session program.
