The notion of sustainability and global warming, or the PC term climate change, rests on the definitions established by those who have a strong self-interest in how they are defined.
Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals comes to mind. As you read through these rules, apply the notion of Sustainability. You'll see what I mean. Also, think about the Occupy Wall Street movement.
"Tactics are those conscious deliberate acts by which human beings live with each other and deal with the world around them. ... Here our concern is with the tactic of taking; how the Have-Nots can take power [and stuff, like money] away from the Haves." p.126
Always remember the first rule of power tactics (pps.127-134):
1 "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have."
As I have said before, Sustainability is all about Power and Control pure and simple. "We are going to destroy your business if you don't do what we say!"
2 "Never go outside the expertise of your people. When an action or tactic is outside the experience of the people, the result is confusion, fear and retreat.... [and] the collapse of communication.
Think about this one, for all those individuals that buy into sustainability, most could not explain the first thing scientifically about their initiatives.
For example, these people believe the second coming is embodied in solar power. Unbeknownst to them is this little problem of overcoming the Second Law of Thermodynamics, which simply stated precludes the transmission of solar generated electricity into the grid.
Now, does solar work on your house, sure. But you would have a very difficult, if not impossible, time transmitting electricity from panels on your house to your neighbor's wall sockets due to this pesky little Second Law of Thermodynamics.
3 "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy. Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)
How many times in the past 3 years have we heard the freaking sky is going to fall if we do not stop global warming NOW! Think "Climate-gate." Practically, everything Congress has done these past 3 years has come as a MAJOR CRISIS. We must act NOW!
4 "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules. You can kill them with this, for they can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity."
This one is interesting and frankly the reason sustainability has not taken hold. It is amazing how after kids accumulate "stuff" they don't want to give it up. I ran a little experiment in my class last semester asking students if they believed in "sharing their wealth." I defined wealth as points toward their final grade. Eighty percent said yes. I then asked them if they would be willing to help out a fellow student by giving up some points to raise the poor performance of a fellow student. None of them were willing to do so, even the one doing poorly.
5 "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counteract ridicule. Also it infuriates the opposition, which then reacts to your advantage."
When it comes to sustainability this rule is used over and over again. How could YOU be against saving the Earth?
6 "A good tactic is one your people enjoy." This rule ties heavily into Rule 1. As long as the mob believes they are "Powerful" they will do just about anything for you. This is the rule that if you believe what I have written here, BUY AMMO! A LOT OF AMMO! Assuming you have a gun.
7 "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag. Man can sustain militant interest in any issue for only a limited time...."
Ever wonder why "climate change" seems to have faded into obscurity over the past year or so. This rule is the reason. It is also why EPA has been doing what they can behind the scenes.
8 "Keep the pressure on, with different tactics and actions, and utilize all events of the period for your purpose."
Again, "climate change" has gone underground at EPA.
9 "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself."
This rule explains entirely why the term "global warming" was changed to "climate change" and "Sustainability" has changed to "Social Responsibility." Everyone involved in this fraud has invested so much time and money into spewing their propaganda even to the extent of relying upon bogus science that they could never admit the entire fiasco has been a sham. Way too much money involved.
10 "The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition. It is this unceasing pressure that results in the reactions from the opposition that are essential for the success of the campaign."
Sustainability has become a virtual cottage industry with pressure being applied from every possible medium available. If you or your company is not for Sustainability you are evil, the anti-Christ, the odor of sulfur, I think you get my point.
11 "If you push a negative hard and deep enough, it will break through into its counterside... every positive has its negative."
Think about it: sustainability has been primarily shoved down peoples' throats using this rule.
12 "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative." The "constructive alternative" in sustainability is the alleged hypocrisy of leaving the planet in better shape then it it is now for our Little Children. This is all about pushing the "Guilt" agenda.
13 Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it. In conflict tactics there are certain rules that [should be regarded] as universalities. One is that the opposition must be singled out as the target and 'frozen.'..."...any target can always say, 'Why do you center on me when there are others to blame as well?' When you 'freeze the target,' you disregard these [rational but distracting] arguments.... Then, as you zero in and freeze your target and carry out your attack, all the 'others' come out of the woodwork very soon. They become visible by their support of the target...'
"One acts decisively only in the conviction that all the angels are on one side and all the devils on the other." Think about all conflicts going on in this country right now. This is the reason Congress cannot get anything done.
Bottom-line, the ONLY way sustainability is going to work is to figure out how those who have been declared "Guilty" of "Unsustainable Acts" can make money by doing "Sustainable Acts." Every decision made in corporate America, and frankly the World, has a price tag attached to it. Sustainability has been around since the Club of Rome published The Limits to Growth in 1972. But, think about it, can you name a single, major, earth-changing sustainable act that has been successful in the past 40 years? For all the hoopla over sustainability, whatever has actually been done has been on the edges. Sustainability is more about Public Relations and selling products then it is about saving the earth.
