AIHA’s survey computed total compensation by adding additional cash compensation received during 1999 to the base salary effective January 1, 2000. Of the industrial hygiene job functions studied, management/administration scored the highest level of compensation with a mean of $84,515

The average salary for all respondents across all areas of responsibility was $72,383, which was depressed by some of the lower paying job areas — analytical chemist ($57,721) and field work and auditing/inspection, both of which reported averages just shy of $60,000 per year.

For all industrial hygienists who responded, the average total compensation was $77,829 for the past year.
