Alan C. McMillan has been named president and chief executive officer of the National Safety Council by the council’s board of directors. McMillan, currently the council's executive vice president, succeeds Gerard F. Scannell, the NSC's president for the past six years.

McMillan has more than 30 years of government and private sector safety, health and environmental experience, including stints with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Mine Safety and Health Administration. He has directed the day-to-day operations of the NSC since February 1995.

Scannell was named president emeritus of the council and will continue to work with the NSC in a fund-raising role.
