The fundamental goals of work health and safety intersect: reducing risk of injury and illness, improving worker retention, enhancing productivity, and saving time and money. Safety and health functions are mutually reinforcing; aligning your values with your structure can help create a true safety culture. The American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine looked at the concept of “Workplace Health Protection and Promotion” in a 2011 guidance statement. Integrating health and safety efforts creates an overall wellness initiative greater than its parts. Evidence proves best outcomes in health and safety occur when the two work synergistically.
Divisions between safety and health increase parochialism and create different “languages” among groups and enormous waste from disparate processes and standalone systems. Training needs are not communicated, critical safety information is not transmitted, and cooperation is stymied by differences of opinion. This makes no sense. Both functions deal with the health and well-being of the workforce, with health costs, compensation, and lost-time issues, and both mitigate risk. Division between the two functions loses sight of the big picture.
