wash hands for healthJust like last year, Deb Group is very active in supporting and celebrating Global Handwashing Day which occurs yearly every October 15th.

The day was originally created for children and schools, but can be celebrated by anyone promoting handwashing with soap. Each year, over 200 million people are involved in celebrations in over 100 countries around the world. However, Global Handwashing has since expanded to include everyone, including all types of workplaces where hand hygiene continues to be a priority.

To celebrate, Deb has launched a Global Handwashing Day website dedicated to awareness of this important day, education on proper hand washing and providing numerous tools that work places can download and shared within their workplaces and online.

Studies show that at least 40 percent of workers do not wash their hands often, or long enough, to protect against the spread of germs.

Germs and bacteria that cause common illnesses are invisible to the naked eye. Whether you are in a workplace, public facility, leisure environment or educational facility, germs are spread from person-to-person and by touching everyday surfaces. In fact, according to a recent presentation by Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist from the University of Arizona, “we share more common surfaces, or fomites, with more people than ever before in history.”

Enclosed environments—like the workplace—where people are working or interacting in close proximity with one another are particularly at higher risk of the spread of germs. Poor hygiene will lead to increased illness and can result in disruption cost, lost productivity, reduced employee efficiency through illness at work and lower morale.

Since hands are responsible for the spread of 80% of common infectious diseases, effective hand hygiene continues to be universally recognized as the smartest, most cost effective means of infection control in the workplace—helping to minimize wasted time and resources and save organizations money all year round.
