Boss gets probation in Arizona worker deaths (8/15)

Brent H. Weidman, formerly the president of a water and sewer company in Yuma, Ariz., has been sentenced to probation and community service, the AP reported. Weidman was convicted in June of negligent homicide in the 2001 deaths of two workers.

Weidman, who has since been teaching at Brigham Young University, will serve a combined seven years' probation and must perform 840 hours of community service teaching safety classes in Yuma, Ariz., for his four felony convictions, two counts of negligent homicide and two counts of reckless endangerment. The two workers, age 26 and 62 respectively, died after being overcome by toxic gases while working on an underground sewage tank.

Weidman's company was convicted after a trial last year of two counts of endangerment and one count each of negligent homicide, aggravated assault and knowing violation of a safety standard causing the death of an employee. It was fined $1.7 million and ordered to start a safety program.
