MoreExxonMobil has agreed to spend $1.5 million in a settlement to compensate for polluting water and failing to adequately ensure against excessive air pollution at its Torrance, Calif., refinery.
A comprehensive EPA study of the refinery in 1994 turned up violations of several environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act and the Community Right to Know Act, according to the agency. ExxonMobil will pay $500,000 in fines, give $200,000 to the Torrance Fire Department to spend on emergency response equipment, and spend $800,000 to study and set up water recycling equipment at the refinery.
