Farm fined in death of Mass. teen (1/10)

A New Hampshire farm is being fined $84,000 for breaking federal workplace safety standards following the death of a teenager from Massachusetts last summer.

Seventeen-year-old Travis DeSimone of Marlborough, Mass., and three other people were working on Corbett Creek Farm when DeSimone was crushed by a falling concrete wall. The group had been hired to convert the dairy barn in Marlborough, N.H., into a dog kennel.

The teenager was killed when the fractured and leaning concrete and fieldstone wall fell on him while he was performing demolition work inside the barn. OSHA's inspection found that he and other employees were assigned to work within the wall's collapse zone, even though the wall presented a clearly recognized hazard. This resulted in a willful citation, with a proposed fine of $63,000.

OSHA also issued Corbett four serious citations and an additional other-than-serious citation.

The farm has 15 days to ask for hearing on the proposed fines.
