Getting supervisors and foremen involved in safety as much as the safety manager

Safety is a line management responsibility. This means that everyone, including the plant manager, must be involved in establishing and communicating safety goals and expectations. People will follow behaviors and actions. If their management is making frequent audits, discussing their safety values and expectations with people and setting performance expectations in performance discussions, the line management will understand that this is part of their personal and professional success.

The safety manager also plays a role in the organization accepting line management involvement in safety. The safety manager should attend safety audits and meetings to observe and coach the leadership. Everyone will be involved in safety and each can support each other to understand work practices, organizational culture and opportunities to make changes in employee safety. The safety manager can start to focus on establishing the plans to make the safety goals achievable. By working with the management and employees, safety programs will become successful because they are owned by the organization versus an individual or office.
