October symposium will focus on managing dust explosion hazards (8/27)

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of the NFPA, will be hosting a two-day long symposium on New Strategies for Dust Explosion Hazard and Control, set to take place on October 20 and 21 at Embassy Suites Kansas City-Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri, according to an NFPA press release.

This symposium will highlight updates in best industry practices for the management of the dust explosion hazard. Keynotes from OSHA and the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) will describe federal and state legislative and enforcement initiatives and the latest changes in NFPA standards. A major case study will be presented and an industry panel will discuss best practice guidance for identifying and mitigating hazards. An optional feature of the symposium will be a tour of the nearby Fike Corporation facility. A one-day seminar on dust explosion hazard prevention and control will also be offered as an adjunct event on Oct. 19.

“This year’s symposium will focus on the practical aspects of implementing good explosion mitigation practices,” says Kathleen Almand, executive director of the Foundation. “It will include a case study from Imperial Sugar on lessons learned from their catastrophic explosion and fire in 2008 and a multi-industry panel presenting their latest best practices.”
