Second sanitation worker dies in Greensboro

Greensboro, N.C., officials are reviewing safety measures after a second sanitation worker was killed on the job in less than two years, according to the Associated Press.

A 43-year-old worker died last week when he was run over by a garbage truck around 9 a.m., police said. He was riding on the back of the truck when he either fell or jumped off just before the truck stopped.

The death comes less than two years after a similar incident, where a worker fell off the back of a truck and was run over.

"We've recently communicated with everyone who does this kind of work. They understand the severity and concerns of riding the truck when it's backing," assistant city manager Mitchell Johnson told AP. "For reasons I don't understand, this happened."

An OSHA spokesman told AP industry guidelines prohibit workers from standing on riding steps while a garbage truck is backing up.
