David B. West, CSP, ASP, P.E., CHMM, Examinations Manager at the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, has been appointed to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel (ASAP).

The ASAP is a senior advisory committee that reports to NASA and Congress. The Panel was established by Congress after the Apollo 1 spacecraft fire in January 1967. The Panel examines the connection NASA management and workplace culture have to safety. The ASAP bases its advice on this direct observation of NASA operations and decision-making, submitting an annual report to the NASA Administrator and to Congress.

West was appointed to a six-year term as a Special Government Employee, beginning on February 1, 2018. He will take part in the First Quarterly Meeting this month at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

“I am humbled to be asked to serve on this esteemed panel,” says West. “I look forward to contributing to the safety of our nation’s space program.”

As Examinations Manager with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), West manages BCSP activities involving the development, validation, maintenance, and administration of examinations for certification candidates in the safety, health, and environment (SH&E) field. He has 30 years of experience in SH&E, in which time he has actively led or supported standards-developing activities for system safety and other specialty engineering disciplines.

West is a Fellow Member of the International System Safety Society (ISSS) and was awarded its highest honor, the Professional Development Award, in 2013. He holds the Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) credentials, and is a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.).

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a not-for-profit corporation recognized as a leader in high-quality, accredited credentialing for safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practitioners. BCSP establishes standards and certifies competency criteria in professional safety practice. Since 1969, over 68,000 of BCSP’s CSP, SMS, ASP, OHST, CHST, STS, STSC, or CET certifications have been achieved.
