Alberta researchers have found drug use to be a big problem in northern Alberta oil camps, CBC Edmonton reports.

Drug use is just one of the health problems uncovered by researchers during a series of interviews with camp workers.

Among the most important findings was that workers are turning to drugs as both an escape and to keep themselves motivated through the weeks of continuous work.

One of the most surprising findings was that people don't consider their behavior to be risky.

Employees associated risks of working in the oil industry as being health and safety risks on the worksite as opposed to activities such as drug use and drinking, said one researcher.
