Haws Corporation names two outside directors (12/8)

December 8, 2008

As part of its continuing effort to enhance operations and grow the business, the Haws Corporation announced the addition of two outside members to the company’s Board of Directors, according to a recent company press release. The appointments of Charles A. (Chuck) Dowd and Dr. H. Dean McKay became effective several months ago.

“Bringing in highly successful, experienced executives to provide fresh ideas and other-industry perspectives is a great idea for any family-owned business. But, for our business, in the growth mode we’re currently in, it is critical to accelerated success,” said Sallie R. Haws, the company’s president. “We are very fortunate to have identified two such ideal candidates for the all-important new director roles,” she added.

Mr. Dowd transitioned last year to senior advisor to Masco Corporation after having been the group president of their Architectural Products Group since 1999. Prior to that time, he had served as president of Delta Faucet Company since 1988 and had been a Masco group vice president – Plumbing Products Group since 1995. Before joining Masco, Chuck was the president of Admiral Corporation, a division of Maytag Corporation.

Mr. Dowd currently serves on several other Boards of Directors, including Fortifiber (Incline Village, Reno, NV and Los Angeles, CA), Buck Knives Corporation (Post Falls, ID), Scott Harvey Wine Company (Napa, CA), Tropitone Furniture Company (Irvine, CA and Sarasota, FL) until November 1, 2007, when Tropitone was sold to Pfingsten Group of Chicago, IL, and is currently a member of the Board of Advisors of Hunter Industries (San Marcos, CA).

Dr. Dean McKay has more than 45 years of experience in executive management, strategic planning, technology development, mergers and acquisitions, and business consulting. In addition to being a published author, he has provided vision and leadership advice to CEOs, corporate presidents, and key executives in a wide range of industries. He is an experienced strategic focus facilitator, having conducted more than 400 corporate and multi-firm sessions designed to create value in private, publicly traded companies and nonprofit organizations. Beyond his basic background as a rocket scientist with the NASA Saturn/Apollo man-on-the-moon program, Dean’s later career experiences have included executive positions at Whittaker Corporation, a New York stock exchange company, CEO and president of Whittaker Zyplex, partner in the Los Angeles Consulting Group, managing director at Hankin & Co., and vice-president at two Fortune 500 firms: Aerojet Electrosystems Company and Allied Signal Corp. As an entrepreneur and business consultant he founded and/or has incubated more than a dozen high-tech startup ventures, including a business that is now in its 4th decade and still going strong.

Dr. McKay currently serves on several other boards, including Southern Trades, Newcastle Capital Corporation, Alpine Interactive, and Alliance Outdoor Lighting.

Sallie Haws summed up the company’s latest move: “As Haws Corporation positions itself for a bright future, we are fortunate to have access to the wisdom and business acumen of Dean McKay and Chuck Dowd. They are most welcome additions to our management team!”
