NFPA announces second Firewise photo contest

Winning photos will be featured in official 2014 Firewise calendar

July 2, 2012

NFPA photo contestThe National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) Firewise® Communities Program is inviting photo enthusiasts to submit their favorite, original photographs of their community’s Firewise Day events or activities to its 2014 Calendar Firewise Day Photo Contest.

Winning entries will be displayed in the 2014 Firewise calendar. The contest runs from July 2, 2012 through November 2, 2012.

One of the steps to becoming a recognized Firewise community involves holding a Firewise Day event. Whether it’s a “chipper day” to clear brush and tree limbs, a state or community fair exhibit, a community clean-up day, or door-to-door outreach, the results of a Firewise event help contribute to a community that is safer from wildfire, and encourages neighbors to work together.

The calendar will serve as a resource for homeowners, wildfire mitigation specialists, landscape architects, planners and others who work within their community to reduce damage caused by brush, grass and forest fires. To create a visually exciting and informative calendar, each photo should highlight community members actively participating in a Firewise Day event. A total of 15 photos will be selected representing each month, beginning with December 2013 and including the back and front covers. The winners will be announced February 8, 2013.

More information about the contest, including rules and how to enter can be found on the Firewise website. Additional resources and tips on how to plan a Firewise Day event are also available. To learn how others have creatively hosted a Firewise event, visit the success stories page on the website.

About Firewise
The Firewise Communities Program encourages local solutions for wildfire safety by involving homeowners, community leaders, planners, developers, firefighters and others in creating fire-adapted communities – places where people and property are safer from the risk of brush, grass and forest fires. Firewise is a program of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and co-sponsored by the USDA Forest Service, the US Department of the Interior and the National Association of State Foresters.

About the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
NFPA is a worldwide leader in fire, electrical, building, and life safety. The mission of the international nonprofit organization founded in 1896 is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training, and education.
