Former OSHA boss Henshaw joins behavioral safety consultants

Behavioral Science Technology, Inc. (BST) scored a coup last week by scooping up former OSHA head John Henshaw as a part-time "senior principal consultant."

Henshaw will "advise BST clients on matters of environmental health and safety (EHS), and leadership's role in creating injury-free workplaces," according to a BST statement.

"We expect John to be an excellent addition to the BST team," said company CEO Patrick Smith. "His passion and experience in both the public and private sectors will help us continue to provide our clients with the best thinking in safety and safety leadership."

In recent years, BST has turned its attention to coaching corporate executives in EHS leadership responsibilities and developing processes to improve organization-wide safety values, communications and overall cultures.

BST recently lost a five-year, up to $10-million contract with NASA to change the agency's culture following the Columbia space shuttle disaster. BST was less than halfway through its work to make NASA attitudes and behaviors more open to dissenting voices, and more cognizant of safety risks. NASA officials had no problems with BST's approach, but said the work could be done in-house, according to a statement.
