House subcommittees set for 110th (1/19)

The Democratic members of the House Committee on Education and Labor met Thursday morning to approve subcommittee chairs and memberships for the 110th Congress, announced committee chairman George Miller, D-Calif.

The recommendations will be sent to the full committee for final approval next week.

Subcommittee on Health, Employment, Labor and Pensions (formerly Employer-Employee Relations), will be chaired by Robert Andrews (D-N.J.), whose district, situated across the river from Pennsylvania, includes a large segment of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Andrews has yet to announce his goals for the committee in this Congress. His Web site and several newspapers describe Andrews as a fiscal conservative or moderate.

The Subcommittee on Workforce Protections will be chaired by Lynn Woolsey, D-Calif. Woolsey’s district includes two northern suburbs of San Francisco. She is the co-chairman of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, a group of several of the Democrats’ more liberal members. Woolsey sponsored a bill last month to encourage workers’ rights protections in China (including safety protocols), and co-sponsored a bill last year to create a National Labor History Month.
