No citations issued in Monsanto double fatality

corn fieldAn accident that killed two 14-year-old workers -- and that made the National Council for Occupational Safety & Health (COSH) list of top 2011 workplace fatalities -- will not result in any OSHA citations against Monsanta Corp., the agency announced yesterday.

Teenagers Jade Garza and Hannah Kendall were electrocuted July 25 while de-tasseling corn in rural northwestern Illinois. Eight others were injured in the incident.

After a six-month investigation, OSHA said it found no evidence to show that Monsanto Corp. and R&J Enterprises of Illinois, Inc. were aware of any electrical hazards in the field. Investigators did say lightning may have struck the field's irrigation system a day or two before the accident, which could have caused the system to become energized.

OSHA has issued hazard alert letters to the land owners, the two companies and Commonwealth Edison.
