RAE Systems Inc. has announced in a recent press release that its MeshGuard wireless gas-detection system has been selected for use in a major methane gas production company.

A leading coal seam methane gas producer in Australia has selected the wireless MeshGuard system to replace traditional fixed and wired gas monitors in methane gas production. The older solution demanded that all of the cables be trenched to maintain intrinsic safety. The wireless MeshGuard system eliminated that deployment step and accelerated time to production by several weeks, the company says. Coal-bed seam methane gas is the cleanest form of natural gas. It is found trapped by water and pressure in coal-bed seams 1,000 to 1,600 feet (300-500 meters) deep. The most common use for this gas is to power steam turbine electricity-generating plants.

“The customer wanted something different from hard-wired, fixed heads or portable instruments,” said Aleks Todorovic, regional sales manager for RAE Systems Australia. “He knew that each well had a finite life and was looking for a robust solution that would reduce his redeployment time and cost. He configured a MeshGuard system consisting of four lower-explosive-limit (LEL) monitors to detect flammable gas leaks along with extended-run-time RAE PowerPaks, two hydrogen sulfide (H2S) monitors and an FMC 2000 controller. The system was delivered, installed on the drilling site and operational in 30 minutes.”

MeshGuard is a flexible, wireless, single gas monitoring system that can be configured to detect carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), Lower Explosive Limit/ Flammability (LEL) and sulphur dioxide (SO2). MeshGuard users can include oil refineries, chemical plants, oil and gas drilling and exploration operations, storage facilities, shipyards, liquid storage terminals and hot process steel mills.

The MeshGuard systems and MeshGuard Rapid Deployment Kits are available from authorized RAE Systems distributors.
