Safety minds meet to discuss consumer product testing and certification (9/7)

NSF International, an independent, not-for-profit organization committed to protecting and improving public health, recently hosted a meeting with Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Commissioner Robert Adler, according to a press release. During the visit, CPSC Commissioner Robert Adler and staff toured NSF International’s laboratories and discussed testing and certification for a range of consumer products.

NSF International and CPSC representatives spoke about future CPSC safety initiatives and how NSF can help support those initiatives via independent testing and certification. NSF also provided an overview of current and future safety initiatives, including toy safety and a new certification program for school products. The standard NSF/NSSEA Standard 380: School Supplies and Equipment in which the new certification program is based covers the health, safety and environmental aspects of school products and equipment (e.g. desks, chairs, lab equipment, etc.).

Participants included: CPSC Commissioner Robert Adler, CPSC Counsel to Commissioner Adler and key management from NSF International. Commissioner Adler and his staff said the visit and lab tour were extremely helpful and provided valuable insight on issues that both NSF and the CPSC take to heart.

“We appreciate Commissioner Adler and his staff taking the time to visit NSF International to discuss a number of new programs, our well-established existing programs and our contribution to consumer safety and public health,” said Kevan P. Lawlor, NSF President & Chief Executive Officer. “We look forward to continuing our working relationship with the CPSC.”
