As a leading source for education among occupational safety and health professionals, the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) has expanded its course offerings in online learning. The ASSE LearnEx program has two courses debuting in March that focus on risk assessment and the new global safety standard, ISO 45001.

ASSE LearnEx educates workplace safety professionals through a completely online experience that has the same educational benefits as the Society’s in-person classes. Participants get the same level of content and engagement while learning at their own pace anywhere an Internet connection is available.

Essential Risk Assessment Tools for Safety Professionals is a four-week course beginning March 4. It features four modules taught by Georgi Popov, Ph.D., QEP, SMS, CMC, a professor in the School of Environmental Physical and Applied Sciences at the University of Central Missouri.

The ISO 45001 certificate program online course also stretches over four weeks, starting March 18. It includes six modules taught by Amy Timmerman, CSP, an EH&S manager at Sage Products and member of the U.S. technical advisory group for ISO 45001 during the past five years.

ASSE has offered webinars and virtual symposia for many years, but the new ASSE LearnEx program that launched last October is set apart by the depth of learning and interactive elements it provides. Each course features a video lecture component, interactive games, a discussion forum where students respond to questions and complete assignments, and a scenario-based assessment that explores a real-world problem.

“Many employers want to support the educational needs of their safety professionals without the added cost of travel and related expenses,” said Keisha Raines, manager of online learning at ASSE. “This program mitigates those concerns while providing the caliber of content that customers expect from us, with greater flexibility.”

As with all ASSE online courses, the ASSE LearnEx program carries continuing education units (CEUs). In addition, the ISO 45001 course introduces ASSE’s first certificate program in online learning. Occupational safety and health professionals can register for the new courses and check out many other online educational opportunities by visiting ASSE’s online learning site.
