A New York City firefighter was killed in the line of duty last week when he fell more than 50 feet to his death while responding to a traffic accident in Brooklyn.

News reports say the incident occurred when Steven Pollard was trying to climb over a double concrete barrier on the Westbound Belt Parkway. Pollard slipped through a 2 ½ - 3 foot wide gap in the roadway and fell to the ground below.

Pollard had been attempting to reach the site of a two-car accident on the bridge in which two men were seriously injured.

His father and brother are also FDNY firefighters.
