A sheriff’s deputy in Pierce Township, Ohio was killed Saturday night after responding to a report of a suicidal man. Another deputy was injured.

According to a press release issued by the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office, Detective Bill Brewer, a 20-year-veteran of the Sheriff’s Office, was allegedly shot by a man who’d barricaded himself inside an apartment complex after calling 911 to report that he was armed and suicidal.

Brewer was part of a Special Response Team that responded and engaged in a 12-hour standoff with 23-year-old Wade Edward Winn, who allegedly exchanged gunfire with the police, killing Detective Bill Brewer and injuring Lt. Nick DeRose.

Winn was taken into custody. During an initial hearing in court today, his bond was set at $10 million. He is expected to be charged with aggravated murder and attempted aggravated murder. Prosecutors reportedly said they would seek the death penalty against Winn.

"Deputy Brewer gave his life attempting to help a person who was admittedly suicidal," Sheriff Steve Leahy said in a statement. "This will forever change the atmosphere of the Clermont County Sheriff's Office."

DeRose was released from University Hospital after being treated for his injuries.
