ACGIH® Board names Frank Mortl III, CAE as Executive Director

February 21, 2019

The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH®) announced today the appointment of Frank Mortl III, CAE as Executive Director of the association. ACGIH® is a 501(c)(3) charitable scientific organization that advances occupational and environmental health. For over 80 years, the group has been highly respected around the world for their dedication to the OEHS community.

“Occupational safety and environmental health effects the well-being of workers as well as members of the community,” said Mortl. “It’s an honor to have been selected by the ACGIH® Board of Directors to lead an organization that since 1938 has been respected worldwide for their dedication to industrial hygienists along with advancing scientific information and data to aid such accomplished professionals in their essential, cutting edge duties.”

As Executive Director, Mortl will be responsible for providing guidance and support to the Board of Directors while leading ACGIH®’s team of professionals who are committed to serving a membership that strives to provide critically important industrial hygiene knowledge along a wide spectrum of topics ranging from air sampling instruments, bioaerosols, biological exposure indices, industrial ventilation, as well as threshold limit values (TLVs®) for chemical substances and physical agents.

“The need for the resources ACGIH® provides to help ensure worker health and safety has never been greater,” said Michael J. Ellenbecker, ScD, CIH, ACGIH® Board Chair. “The Board believes that Frank is highly qualified and well-prepared to lead ACGIH® in this effort. We look forward to working with Frank, our dedicated staff, and our volunteer committees as we continue to do everything we can to build safer workplaces.”

Most recently, as the President of the American Fire Sprinkler Association (AFSA), Mortl notably led the implementation of strategic goals to drive both short- and long-term innovation and sustainability for the $6M organization, developed considerable operational budget growth, oversaw delivery of AFSA Annual Conferences with record-breaking attendance, produced the expansion and enhancement of benefits and services, and significantly increased the number of members along with their engagement levels.

Previously, Mortl has held the title of Executive Director of the American Society of Gene & Cell Therapy; Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Kalamazoo Association of REALTORS®; as well as Executive Director of the Michigan Lupus Foundation. Additionally, Mortl is a proud alumnus of Michigan State University and Michigan State University College of Law.

Mortl is a Certified Association Executive (CAE), conferred to him by the American Society of Association Executives in 2015, and has continually maintained that distinctive honor – the highest credential in the association industry which is currently designated to only 4,000+ association executives, less than 2% of the hundreds of thousands of nonprofit professionals around the world.
