Employee selection based on genetic test results is a real and dangerous threat, according to a new report from GeneWatch.

The report, Genetic Testing in the Workplace, found that:

  • Genetic tests that predict future disability or illness are inaccurate, but despite this many employers want to use them;

  • Many research projects are seeking to identify people who are genetically susceptible to workplace hazards;

  • Genetic testing could lead to the exclusion of many people to try to prevent a single case of workplace illness.

    GeneWatch is campaigning to get legal protection for people who may produce adverse genetic test results but have no symptoms.

    GeneWatch is concerned that workers could be selected to suit hazardous environments or to cut pensions costs. As workplace hazards affect all employees, whatever their genetic makeup, workers would still be at risk.
