Defibtech will receive the 2013 “Exporter of the Year” Award on Capitol Hill on April 24 from ThinkGlobal Inc., publisher of Commercial News USA, the official export promotion magazine of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Headquartered in Guilford, Conn., Defibtech creates and manufactures automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which include the Lifeline™ and ReviveR™ families of AEDs. All Defibtech AEDs are manufactured in the U.S. The company is the sole winner of the Exporter of the Year award in the medical/scientific product and equipment category. Only one award will be given in each of 13 industry categories. Defibtech is the only Connecticut and New England company receiving an award.

WHEN and WHERE: 8 to 10 a.m., Wednesday April 24, B-340 Rayburn House Office Building, Capitol Hill. U.S. Senator Chris Murphy from Connecticut plans to attend the event.

“International sales have been a key component of Defibtech’s business strategy for almost a decade,” said Gintaras Vaisnys, Defibtech president. “More than 40 percent of our sales are international, allowing us to diversify from the specific ups and downs of the U.S. economy. In addition, this strategy has allowed Defibtech much more room for growth as a result of the greatly increased sales opportunities in the worldwide market.”

Defibtech AEDs treat sudden cardiac arrest, the most common cause of death worldwide. About 7 million persons die worldwide from sudden cardiac arrest each year, most because an AED is not available to treat them. For this reason, increasing numbers of AEDs are being placed in workplaces, schools, transportation hubs, public gathering areas, and other locations where large numbers of people congregate.

Defibtech’s reliable, innovative, easy-to-use, and affordable AEDs can be operated successfully by virtually anyone and have become a popular choice worldwide. Defibtech has received more than 25 awards from various organizations recognizing quality and/or industrial design innovation.

“Defibtech is indicative of how proactive American companies are growing by exporting,” said Gregory Sandler, president of ThinkGlobal. “This year’s winners reflect the diversity of American exporters, 97 percent of whom are small-medium sized enterprises. Exporting is a critical part of the U.S. economy, accounting for 12.5 percent of the nation’s GDP. In fact, 70 percent of the world’s purchasing power is located outside of the United States.”

Commercial News USA is a catalog-style magazine that reaches more than a quarter-million readers in 178 countries worldwide in print and online. All Exporter of the Year award winners are profiled in the May/June 2013 issue of Commercial News USA.
