Cirrus Research: Innovative noise measurement

January 3, 2014
Tell us a little about the history of your company.

Cirrus Research is a UK-based company that specializes in the design and manufacture of noise measurement instruments, including sound level meters, noise dosimeters, environmental noise monitors and acoustic calibrators.

Founded in 1970, Cirrus Research plc is a leading specialist in the development and production of noise measurement instruments which are used in a wide range of different applications within the construction, transport, aviation, manufacturing and leisure, and sport sectors.

The Cirrus Research head office, located in Hunmanby, North Yorkshire, supports sales, marketing, administration and calibration. Manufacturing is carried out at a second site, close by, allowing strict control over product quality.

Cirrus is part of the British Safety Industry Federation’s Registered Safety Supplier Scheme, identifying its organization and products as ‘genuine and safe’, assuring customers that the products supplied are genuine, properly tested and certificated. Cirrus Research is also an ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 Registered Company.

Our products are available worldwide either through Cirrus offices in the UK, France, Germany and Spain or through a network of carefully chosen distributors.

What has been your company’s business strategy to gain market share?

Throughout its history, Cirrus has focused solely on noise measurement instrumentation. This has allowed us to integrate the very latest technology into our sound level meters and noise dosimeters whilst ensuring the ease of use that our customers demand.

Using this core philosophy, we have ensured that our product line has continued to develop along with our customers’ needs and that our instrumentation meets the very latest standards, regulations and guidelines.

Describe the core branded products your company promotes.

Our core product range comprises the Optimus® Sound Level Meters and the doseBadge® Noise Dosimeter. Around these core products are a range of options and accessories that allow the instruments to be used in a wide range of industries and across almost every noise measurement application.

The 26 versions of the Optimus Sound Level Meters cover every application from simple noise testing, through Occupational and Industrial Hygiene to Environmental noise monitoring and compliance.

How do distributors contribute to your success in the marketplace?

Our distributors are often the first physical point of contact that our customers have with our products.

By carefully selecting our distributors, we can ensure that they offer the level of service and support that we offer to our direct end-user customers in the UK.

This means that the customers have effectively a direct line to the manufacturer if and when they need extra support, and that our distributors represent the values and qualities of Cirrus.

Do you offer distributors training and other value-added services?

We provide training both at the distributor’s location and at the Cirrus head office in the UK as well as on-going support via on-line channels.

Our products are supported by an industry-leading, 15-year warranty and, as such, our distributors are creating long-term relationships with our customers, offering added value to the noise measurement equipment in terms of training, support, advice and equipment calibration.

What business characteristics do you look for when selecting to work with a distributor?

Our distributors are carefully selected and must be able to demonstrate excellent technical knowledge as well as a dedication to customer support. They will often be representing other measurement instrumentation manufacturers whose products complement those of Cirrus.

Our distributors must be able to provide a high level of backup and support and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the market and where Cirrus’ noise measurement products fit into that market.

Do you have any recent news to report?

As part of an on-going expansion plan in the North American market, Cirrus has recently appointed three new distributors in the U.S. and one in Canada.

Don Wolf & Associates has been appointed to cover Southern California whilst MEDI has responsibility for the Northern part of the state.

Scantek Inc., based in Colombia, MD, will represent Cirrus across Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.

Geneq Inc., based in Montreal, has been appointed as a distributor for Canada.

Cirrus Research already has in place 3 other distributors across the U.S. Other U.S. territories covered on behalf of Cirrus Research are:

  • A J Abrams – New York State, Pennsylvania and the northeastern states
  • ISI – Ohio & surrounding regions
  • OHD – The southeast & central southern states

What should distributors know about your company’s future?

Cirrus Research is dedicated to the design and manufacture of innovative and technically advanced noise measurement instruments.

Our philosophy is to provide to our customer, through our distributors, a range of sound level meters, noise dosimeters and environmental noise measurement products that allow them to meet their needs, quickly and easily.

Our strategy is to appoint distributors who are committed to a high level of customer service and who can represent Cirrus in the market in the way that we require. Our aim is to develop a long-term relationship with our distributors and to provide support and service to our customers, many of whom have been with Cirrus for many years.
