Protecting workers from vehicle accidents

Two public outreach campaigns this month aim to reduce work-related vehicle accidents – the number one cause of occupational fatalities. In keeping with the National Safety Council’s (NSC) designation of April as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the organization is offering a free webinar, “Engaging Ways to Address Distracted Driving at Work,” on April 19, 2018.

Uber self-driving vehicle that killed pedestrian studied by NTSB

March 21, 2018
The nation's first pedestrian death involving an autonomous vehicle may have been unavoidable, according to local authorities, although the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigation into the incident continues. The accident occurred Sunday night around 10 p.m., when 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg was struck by an Uber self-driving vehicle as she walked across a busy street outside of a crosswalk.

Researcher says auto safety measures prevented millions of deaths

Traffic safety measures ranging from seat belt and drunk driving enforcement to design standards for cars and trucks “averted a public health disaster” by preventing about 5.8 million deaths in the U.S. from 1968 through 2015, according to a new study. The analysis found that without federal and state policies, traffic deaths annually would “likely have been in the hundreds of thousands rather than tens of thousands” in recent years.

National Safety Council digitizes nearly 100 years of injury and fatality data to help Americans understand their greatest safety challenges

While many Americans fear flying, violence and natural disasters, the odds of dying from preventable, everyday incidents are far greater – the greatest ever, in fact, in United States history. A person’s lifetime odds of dying from any unintentional cause have risen to one in 25 – up from odds of one in 30 in 2004, according to National Safety Council analysis.

The increasing use of smartphones and recreational marijuana may be contributing to a surge in the numbers of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes, according to a new analysis. The report by the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that pedestrian fatalities totaled about 6,000 in 2017, roughly the same as the year before, when the official count was 5,987.

In recent years, Polaris Industries, the leading producer of off-road vehicles, has recalled hundreds of thousands of its trail machines due to a fire danger. The hazard is linked to at least three deaths and three dozen injuries ranging from minor scrapes to limbs burned so badly amputation was required.

Drowsy driving a bigger problem than previously thought

The percentage of crashes involving drowsiness is nearly eight times higher than federal estimates indicate, according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. The travel organization is touting the study as the most in-depth drowsy driving research ever conducted in the U.S. using footage of everyday drivers.

The victims include a Bible college student in Iowa who was bicycling home from work, a 13-year-old Michigan boy riding in his older sister’s car and a Minnesota school bus driver picking up the morning newspaper in front of his home. All were killed in recent years by distracted drivers who had been texting or looking at their GPS. Yet none of the drivers responsible for those deaths spent more than a few days behind bars.
