The Penn State culture: “We are not all football drones”

I'm a proud PSU graduate and currently live in the community.

When you all speak of the culture, it's like we are being talked about like we are objects inside of a fishbowl stereotyped by the bad actions of a few, instead of as individual people.

The community is saddened by all of this, we were as surprised as the rest of the world to learn these activities took place and the children were not more protected by university officials.

Not all of us agree with the Freeh report completely because it was taken verbatim and unchecked. While it does bring about failures in the PSU system it also makes assumptions that have not been substantiated.

People keep calling PSU a football school like the students only go to PSU to watch football games. That is not true.

While our former coach JoePa was an icon, he was not the main reason for a 100,000 students every year to choose PSU as their college.

It's nonsensical to categorize all former alumni and current students as football drones. PSU alumni are well-respected in industry, government, communities - positivitely affecting peoples lives for more than a hundred years.

The culture at PSU currently is in mourning but also exhibiting a pride in our school to move forward and do what is right. We will set an example for how the strength of our community can become stronger and become the model for reform, not failure.
