Occupational noise exposures represent an important but under-recognized cause of disease and disability in the United States. Now titled as Audible Sound, the ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents (TLV®-PA) Committee has proposed a revision to the TLV® for Noise. This webinar will highlight the available information on sources and trends of occupational noise exposures in the U.S., discuss the elements and recommendations in the draft Notice of Intended Change (NIC) TLV® Documentation, including a review of the proposed notes that link occupational noise exposure to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (including hypertension and ischemic heart disease), as well as increased risk of occupational injuries. The list of chemicals indicated as ototoxic, even in the absence of noise, has also been expanded in the draft NIC TLV® Documentation. This webinar will also review the recent scientific literature cited within the draft NIC Documentation supporting the addition of notes and expansion of the list of ototoxic substances, and will also cover best practices and available resources for the prevention of occupational noise-induced hearing loss. Participants will receive a copy of the proposed NIC Documentation for Audible Sound with their registration (a $60 value).

Richard L. Neitzel, PhD, CIH will present this webinar.
Richard L. Neitzel, PhD, CIH is an Associate Professor in the exposure science program of the University of Michigan (UM) Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and also serves as the Associate Chair of the department. Dr. Neitzel has a PhD in Environmental and Occupational Hygiene from the University of Washington, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Dr. Neitzel has published nearly 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts on topics related to exposure science, more than 40 of which focus on noise and hearing loss. His research interests include assessment of exposures to noise and injury risk factors in workplaces and community settings, and evaluation of auditory and non-auditory effects of noise and heavy metals. Dr. Neitzel has studied exposures and health outcomes among mining construction, and industrial workers in the U.S., Thailand, Ghana, and Sweden. He has created a job exposure matrix for occupational noise exposures in the U.S. and Canada, available at http://noisejem.sph.umich.edu. Dr. Neitzel currently serves as Vice-Chair of the ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents (TLV®-PA) Committee.
