ACGIH® will present ACGIH® TLV® for Audible Sound – Understanding the Proposed Notice of Intended Change to the ACGIH® TLV® for Noise on October 18, 2017 at the following times:

2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time
1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Central Time
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Mountain Time
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Pacific Time

Occupational noise exposures represent an important but under-recognized cause of disease and disability in the United States. Now titled as Audible Sound, the ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents (TLV®-PA) Committee has proposed a revision to the TLV® for Noise. This webinar will highlight the available information on sources and trends of occupational noise exposures in the U.S., discuss the elements and recommendations in the draft Notice of Intended Change (NIC) TLV® Documentation, including a review of the proposed notes that link occupational noise exposure to increased risk of cardiovascular disease (including hypertension and ischemic heart disease), as well as increased risk of occupational injuries. The list of chemicals indicated as ototoxic, even in the absence of noise, has also been expanded in the draft NIC TLV® Documentation. This webinar will also review the recent scientific literature cited within the draft NIC Documentation supporting the addition of notes and expansion of the list of ototoxic substances, and will also cover best practices and available resources for the prevention of occupational noise-induced hearing loss. Participants will receive a copy of the proposed NIC Documentation for Audible Sound with their registration (a $60 value).

After participating in this webinar, attendees will:

  • Understand the sources and trends in occupational audible sound exposures in the United States
  • Be able to describe emerging health effects associated with occupational audible sound exposures, including cardiovascular disease and increased risk of occupational injuries
  • Understand the proposed changes described in the NIC Documentation for Audible Sound
  • Be able to list ototoxic substances described in the NIC Documentation for Audible Sound
  • Be able to describe best practices for prevention of occupational audible sound-induced hearing loss

U.S. and Canadian attendees can connect to the audio portion of the webinar via the toll-free audio telephone link or listen to the audio portion through an audio stream directly through their computer. Richard L. Neitzel, PhD, CIH will present this webinar.

Richard L. Neitzel, PhD, CIH is an Associate Professor in the exposure science program of the University of Michigan (UM) Department of Environmental Health Sciences, and also serves as the Associate Chair of the department. Dr. Neitzel has a PhD in Environmental and Occupational Hygiene from the University of Washington, and is a Certified Industrial Hygienist and a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Dr. Neitzel has published nearly 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts on topics related to exposure science, more than 40 of which focus on noise and hearing loss. His research interests include assessment of exposures to noise and injury risk factors in workplaces and community settings, and evaluation of auditory and non-auditory effects of noise and heavy metals. Dr. Neitzel has studied exposures and health outcomes among mining construction, and industrial workers in the U.S., Thailand, Ghana, and Sweden. He has created a job exposure matrix for occupational noise exposures in the U.S. and Canada, available at http://noisejem.sph.umich.edu. Dr. Neitzel currently serves as Vice-Chair of the  ACGIH® Threshold Limit Values for Physical Agents (TLV®-PA) Committee.

This webinar contains 1.0 contact hour and may be eligible for ABIH CM credit. See the ABIH website (www.abih.org) for CM credit criteria. This webinar may also qualify for BCSP recertification points for Certified Safety Professionals. Participants seeking confirmation of attendance for the webinar from ACGIH® must attend the live webinar or view the archive and submit a final exam and evaluation. Certificates of Completion will be issued in a timely manner after receipt and completion of these items.
