McWane plant suffers another fatality

A worker died after he slipped and fell into a machine used to separate sand from steel components at Kennedy Valve in Elmira, N.Y., in late February, marking the second job fatality at the plant in nine years, according to press reports.

McWane, Inc., of Birmingham, Ala., the parent company of Kennedy Valve, was the subject of a New York Times investigative series last year that focused on the company's high accident rate, and McWane facilities have been the target of ongoing OSHA investigations.

The 45-year-old worker's death is the second in a McWane facility since 2001.

Kennedy Valve manufactures fire hydrants and control valves.
