OSHA Publishes Bulletin on Oil & Gas Production Safety (4/18)

Responding to a fatal Jan. 13, 2008, incident, in which an ignited vapor cloud led to a fire at Texas oilfield waste disposal facility, OSHA recently published a new information bulletin to highlight specific workplace hazards for the oil and gas industry.

According to an agency press release, OSHA and the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board investigated the incident which claimed the lives of two workers in the Houston-area facility. The investigators determined the fire was caused by the ignition of hydrocarbon vapor, likely caused by the vacuum trucks’ diesel engines.

The bulletin outlines specific methods for employers and employees to address the contributing hazards for this incident, and prevent future incidents.
